NFL Draft: SMU RB Brashard Smith meets with Texans for prospect visit
While the Houston Texans don't need a lead running back, the 2025 NFL Draft features perhaps the deepest amount of NFL talent in recent memory. As a late-round addition, perhaps targeting a future heir to Dameon Pierce is best for all sides.
One name recently is expected to stop by by NRG Stadium.
According to KRPC2 Sports' Aaron Wilson, SMU leading rusher Brashard Smith will meet with the Texans as one of the team's local visits. The Mustangs star is also expected to meet with the Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Dallas Cowboys.
An All-ACC first-team selection, Smith rushed for 1,332 yards and 14 touchdowns last season while helping the Mustangs reach the College Football Playoff. He also caught 39 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns.
Consistency is one of the best assets of Smith's game. He never recorded a fumble in over 250 career carries between his time at Miami and SMU. Smith also averaged over 5.7 yards a play during his final three collegiate seasons.
SMU RB Brashard Smith says he has 30 visits scheduled with the Vikings, Bears and Houston Texans. He also plans to visit with the Dallas Cowboys. He’s eligible for Dallas Day.

At last month's combine, Smith posted a 4.39 40-time, with 32.5 inch vertical and a 9-foot-9 broad jump. He also wowed scouting the on-field portion of the drills as a receiving threat during the gauntlet.
Joe Mixon isn't going anywhere after his breakout first season in Houston, but with Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale in contract years, targeting a running back to ease tension off the Pro Bowler in 2026 and beyond. Smith wouldn't be a focal point of the offense in Year 1, but proving that his potential is worth holding onto might benefit the Texans in their race back to the postseason.
