Many expect the New York Giants to select a quarterback third overall in the 2025 NFL draft, but on Monday at the NFL owners' meetings in Florida, general manager Joe Schoen appeared to lay the groundwork for going in a different direction.
"We can go any which direction," Schoen said, via NJ Advance Media. "It doesn't force you into a corner or force you to have to take something based on need.
"We're in a position where we can take who we think is the best football player at that time."
Non-quarterback options are likely to include Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, who could go No. 2 overall to the Cleveland Browns, and Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter.
Early offseason reports suggested the Giants viewed Hunter as a cornerback only, but head coach Brian Daboll threw cold water on that notion Tuesday morning.
"I think he's a good player both ways," Daboll told reporters. "It takes a long time to evaluate him because there’s a lot of tape. It’s really remarkable what he has done and the ability to perform at that level -- not really getting a rest.
"He's been a fun player to evaluate, to meet, to talk with. He's a heckuva player."
Pressed further on if the Giants view Hunter as a cornerback or wide receiver, Daboll expressed "appreciation" for the question and offered another honest answer.
"We'll evaluate him at both spots," he said.
It seems unlikely that the Giants -- or any other NFL team -- would play Hunter full-time at both positions, but he could be used at either depending on team needs, injuries, and circumstances. But if there was one coach in the NFL who might be open to the idea, it'd be Daboll.
Daboll served on a New England Patriots coaching staff that saw Troy Brown, who is currently an offensive assistant for the Giants, spend time at both wide receiver and defensive back.
