Over the past several years, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has been coy about the team's play-caller throughout the spring and into the fall.
In 2022, offensive coordinator Mike Kafka called the plays, but that changed in 2023. The offense had regressed and Daboll, at times, took the duties from Kafka and was even rumored to have allowed other assistants to call plays.
Then, in 2024, Daboll assumed the duties outright after failing to commit to the obvious pending change throughout the offseason.
The results weren't much better, and that led to some interesting commentary from Giants co-owner John Mara during his season-ending press conference.
"Maybe he makes some other changes in the way he operates going forward. I talked to him about, 'Do you really believe that it's in our best interest for you to continue calling the plays?' I said, 'I'm not going to demand that you do one thing or the other. But are you better off letting somebody else call the plays?' That's a discussion that we're going to continue to have," Mara said.
"There are issues like that that we have to have some further discussion about. But at the end of the day, he's got to make the decision on whether he does that, on whether he wants to make replacements in the staff. That's got to be his decision at the end of the day."
At the time, Daboll acknowledged the conversation and said the play-calling duties would be evaluated.
Little has changed between then and now as Daboll, speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings in Florida, said no final decision has been made and the evaluation will be ongoing -- possibly into the preseason.
Brian Daboll said he will go through the spring and summer before making a decision about whether or not he continues to call the plays on offense.

It would stand to benefit Daboll to surrender play-calling duties, allowing him to spend more time with each unit and positional group. Things didn't work as he anticipated in 2024 and even with a new quarterback room, there's no reason to believe it would lead to a notable change in 2025.
However, with his job on the line, would Daboll really be willing to risk his future in East Rutherford by putting the play-calling duties in someone else's hands?
Time will tell. It's back to the waiting game.
