New York Giants' draft plans should become clearer after Colorado Pro Day
The month of March is half over and free agency is in its second and possibly third wave. The New York Giants' quarterback plans are being held up by the finicky Aaron Rodgers and the subsequent unappealing veteran choices available on the market.
The plan is to find a veteran who can serve as a bridge to a younger player who will then become their franchise quarterback.
The Giants will be doing all of their due diligence over the next six weeks when it comes to quarterbacks in this year's NFL draft. They will want to personally work out all of the top options and will get their chance in the next few weeks at the college pro days.
April 4 is a key date for the Giants. That is when the University of Colorado holds its Pro Day. Two players the Giants -- and every other NFL team -- will be focused on are cornerback/receiver Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
"We should have all 32 teams in attendance because we got that many players that can flat-out play the game," Colorado head coach Deion Sanders said during a press conference Monday.
The Giants have the third overall selection in the draft this year. The top three rated players on the board are (not in any order) Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, Hunter, the Heisman Trophy winner, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
Shedeur Sanders, Deion's son, is also expected to be a top selection. The Giants would like to see if he's worthy of the third overall pick.
The Colorado Pro Day could garner live coverage from the NFL Network. Deion is hoping they do. He has already made a splash in Boulder and wants to expand the program's reach.
"We're going to try to put on the best show possible for the fans, as well as these young men, to have them in a capacity (where) they're at peace, they're at home, they can relax and just do what they've been gifted to do," the elder Sanders said. "I'm excited about that, I really am, because I know all 32 teams will be represented here. It's going to be phenomenal for our program."The Giants will get to see Ward next week at Miami's pro day on March 24. NFL Network should be on hand for that one as well as Ward is expected to go in the first three picks in the draft. If he wows them, Sanders and Hunter will have a tough act to follow.
The Giants have reportedly been considering a trade with the Tennessee Titans up to the top of the draft order to ensure they get the player they want. That, however, could prove costly as these high-profile workouts will better reveal the worth of these prospects.
