New York Giants add 'battle tested' offensive lineman in latest Draft Wire mock
The first wave of free agency has officially come and gone, and for many teams across the league, it has led to an adjustment of their 2025 NFL draft boards. The New York Giants are no different.
At the top, the Giants are still very much in need of a quarterback as they await the decision of Aaron Rodgers and weigh the backup options of Russell Wilson and Joe Flacco. But further down the line, their need for a cornerback and safety has subsided.
They are also feeling less pressure to address the defensive tackle position, and while they did add bodies across the offensive line, the right guard position remains a concern. They could solve that by adding a player to start over Greg Van Roten, or by moving Jermaine Eluemunor back inside.
In the latest mock from Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire, the Giants stay put at No. 3 and opt for the latter option, bypassing quarterback Shedeur Sanders in favor of LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell.
With Ward off the board, the Giants go with the top offensive tackle and address quarterback another way.
While passing on Sanders is justified, it's harder to swallow passing on Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. But that's not to say Campbell is a slouch -- he's the top player at his position and a top 10 player in the draft.
There are some flaws to Campbell's game, however. And NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has pondered if he's better suited at guard.
Athletic left tackle prospect who's durable and battle-tested but has elements of high risk, high reward in his game. Campbell is a thumping run blocker who can clear out B-gaps with forceful down blocks and displace base blocks with his “strike and run” technique. He struggles to win laterally, though. He will lunge and miss against stunts and movement. Campbell operates with good athleticism and agility in pass protection but is way too leaky against inside moves. He has a jarring, heavy punch and can latch in to control the rep. However, he has short arms and when he’s beaten to first action, the footwork and technique go out the window, forcing him to scramble and survive to save the pocket. His play is determined, spirited and aggressive, which works in his favor, but Campbell must learn to vary his pass-set technique and operate with optimal hand timing in order to thrive at tackle instead of being moved to guard.
The Giants already have a tackle-guard reclamation project in former first-round pick Evan Neal and could ill afford another. But if they managed to hit on Campbell's high ceiling, they would have dominant bookend tackles along with Andrew Thomas for years to come.
