New Bedford Half Marathon is Sunday: What's closed, where to park, and how to watch
NEW BEDFORD — The New Bedford Half-Marathon is set to return on Sunday, March 16. From 11 a.m. to about 2 p.m., downtown New Bedford will be shut down, with heavy traffic due to parking bans and street closures as more than 1,800 runners are expected to participate.
The 13.1-mile race goes as far north as Nauset Street and Hathaway Road, and south to the peninsula, then back downtown.
For New Bedford residents, visitors, runners and spectators, here’s everything you need to know to have fun and stay safe.
When will streets be closed for the New Bedford Half Marathon?
There will be rolling street closures along the course, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, once the last runners have passed a certain area, the street is reopened.
The race proceeds at the pace of the slowest runner for three of the closures.
Cove Road will be the longest street closure, and drivers should be aware of single-side driving on Rockdale Avenue. The runners will have one side of the road and cars moving in both directions will split the other side of the road.
There’s no parking along the race route. Police encourage residents who live in the South End, especially those who live on the peninsula, to plan to leave for any necessary travel before 10 a.m. and return after 1:30 p.m.
Where should people park during the New Bedford Half Marathon?
The best places to park are the Elm Street Garage and Zeiterion Theater parking lot and garage.
Where should you watch the half marathon?
The race starts and finishes at City Hall Plaza. Guests are invited to remain until the race ends.
Another place for spectators is at the top of the County Street hill, the 12.2 mile mark, as runners near the end of the course.
For South End residents, people can watch the race from both sides of the peninsula. Music will play at multiple spots along the course.
How should I prepare to watch the race?
Spectators can bring lounge chairs and a lunch to watch on the sidelines of the marathon.
The New Bedford Police Department has asked runners and spectators not to bring bags to the course, as backpacks, suitcases and rolling bags will not be permitted near the start/finish area.
How is the New Bedford Half Marathon going to be made safe?
Nearly 125 New Bedford police officers will patrol the course, and ambulances staffed by New Bedford Emergency Medical Services will be stationed throughout the city.
Will there be SRTA bus service during the New Bedford Half Marathon?
The Southeast Regional Transit Authority’s Downtown terminal will be closed and all routes will be detoured to MacArthur Drive and Union Street for the day. SRTA is also expecting delays that day due to road closures. Several routes in the city will be suspended from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Visit srtabus.com for more details.
Can you still register for the New Bedford Half Marathon?
Runners can still sign up. The course is a challenging one that includes two major hills, while featuring waterfront views.
Registration is open from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Register in person at the YMCA. For any questions or information on volunteering, visit the New Bedford Half-Marathon website.
