Ndoye: ‘I had less chance of scoring’ under Motta, 8x more goals under Italiano

Bologna winger Dan Ndoye has explained why a change in tactics has helped him score eight times as many goals in 2024-25 under Vincenzo Italiano compared to the 2023-24 season under the former Rossoblu and ex-Juventus head coach Thiago Motta.

Ndoye, Italiano and Bologna – individually and collectively – are enjoying an excellent season in Serie A, currently sitting in the Champions League spots and one point off third place with seven games of the 2024-25 campaign to go.

Ndoye has been a crucial part of Italiano’s attacking line-up this season, and has contributed with eight goals and three assists off the wing so far. He had scored just one league goal across the whole of 2023-24 while Motta was in charge.

The Switzerland international also scored a brilliant improvised goal during the team’s 1-1 draw with Napoli on Monday night, which he feels is the best of his catalogue so far.

“The goal against Napoli is the best of my career. I saw the ball coming back a bit, instinctively, I tried to hit it with my heel and the shot came off for me,” Ndoye said on the After Italie Podcast on RMC Sport.

Ndoye explains why he scores more goals under Italiano than Motta

He went on to explain how Italiano is getting the best out of him this season.

“I’m scoring more this season because of Vincenzo Italiano’s game. He knows how to talk to us players, get the best out of us. He’s instilled this idea of fearless, high pressing. We are always faithful to our philosophy, against the big teams and against those fighting to avoid relegation to Serie B.
