Will New Mexico coach Richard Pitino live up to the family name and push his Lobos to a second-round NCAA Tournament game?
These questions will be answered Friday night as the two schools meet in a first-round game at Rocket Arena.

How Marquette and New Mexico men's basketball got here
- The Lobos (26-7) went 17-3 in the Mountain West to win the regular-season title, but lost to Boise State in the conference tournament semifinals before earning an at-large bid. It's New Mexico's second season in a row in the NCAA Tournament.
- Smart, who was an assistant coach for Akron from 2003-06, has the Golden Eagles (23-10) in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth season in a row. Marquette earned an at-large bid after a 13-7 season in the Big East and a loss to St. John's in the conference tournament semifinals.
New Mexico, Marquette NCAA tournament history
- Marquette has made 37 NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the Final Four in 1974, 1977 and 2003. The Golden Eagles won a title in 1977 and were national runners-up in 1974.
- New Mexico has 17 NCAA Tournament appearances and has won seven first-round games. The Lobos have reached the Sweet 16 twice (1968, 1974).
Who to watch for New Mexico, Marquette men's basketball teams
- It's Donovan Dent for New Mexico. The 6-foot-2 guard averages 20.6 points and 6.4 assists and shoots 41.5% from behind the arc. He had a 40-point outing against VCU earlier this season.
- Kam Jones is the man for Marquette. The 6-5 guard averages 19.3 points and 5.9 assists and shoots 48% from the floor. He has scored 32 points three times this season (against St. John's, Wisconsin, Stony Brook).
