NCAA National Quarter-Finals Set After Three Advance
Minnesota-Duluth, Clarkson, and St. Lawrence punched their tickets into the NCAA national tournament quarter-finals with a trio of decisive wins in the opening round.
Hustler Lifts St. Lawrence Over Penn State
Abby Hustler scored twice for the St. Lawrence Saints setting up a quarter-final game against Ohio State. The Saints defeated Penn State 4-1.
"We feel like we've been playing really good hockey for the last two months and to be able to get on top of them early which was important," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "I think coming into the week, the way our players prepared to play, we were really able to get the game started on the right foot. There was a certain calmness about us the last three days, but the experience from last year really helped us prepare for this year."
Also scoring for St. Lawrence were Kennedy Wilson and Kristina Bahl. Kendall Butze had Penn State's lone goal.
Minnesota-Duluth Romps Sacred Heart
In the most lopsided result of the day, the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs beat Sacred Heart 6-1.
While five teams got automatic bids to the quarter-finals, the Bulldogs were happy to get a game in before their quarter-final match up against Cornell.
"It's amazing, we talked just about how much we love just getting this first game to get our feet under us, I think that's actually a huge benefit for us," said UMD captain Clara Van Wieren.
Van Wieren had a goal and an assist in the win. Olivia Mobley and Danielle Burgen each scored a pair for the Bulldogs, while Grace Sadura had a single. Kate Helgesen scored the lone Sacred Heart goal.
Clarkson Sets Date With #1 Wisconsin
The Clarkson Golden Knights beat Boston University 3-1 to set a date with the top ranked Wisconsin Badgers in the quarter-finals. Anne Cherkowski opened the scoring for Clarkson before assisting on Rhea Hicks' goal to give the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless second period, Lindsay Bochna pulled Boston University within one with only 4:01 remaining in the game. Clarkson however, would get the insurance they needed as Sena Catterall scored into the empty net.
The other quarter-final in the NCAA national championship tournament will see #4 Minnesota face #5 Colgate who both earned opening round byes.
