Good Morning, Illini Nation: NCAA seeding implications

Mar. 14—Illinois' opportunity to improve its NCAA tournament seeding will continue today. Beating Iowa and adding another Quad II win to their résumé didn't do much for the Illini. They entered Thursday's game projected as a No. 6 in the BracketMatrix, and likely stayed their with the 106-94 win against the Hawkeyes.

The rest of Illinois' games in Indianapolis, starting at least with Maryland today, will be Quad I games. Stack one or more of those, and there's a real opportunity for Illinois to move up from the No. 6 seed line.

"They can move up a line — maybe even two," CBS Sports' Jerry Palm said about what's possible for Illinois in the Big Ten tournament during his recent SportsTalk appearance. Palm currently has the Illini as a No. 7 seed.

"If they won the conference championship, they're probably at least a five," the CBS Sports bracketologist continued. "It depends on what other teams do, but they'll be the one that's winning. A lot of teams around them will take a loss.

"I just think Illinois is a good team that probably has not played to the level they were capable of. Part of it certainly has to do with the illnesses going through the team. ... Illinois is a team I think could be under-seeded relative to its quality and have a chance to be a team you don't want to see if you're a higher-seeded team."
