More help could be coming for Commanders in 2025
The Commanders may have more players that will contribute in 2025.
It's easy to look at the trades and free-agent signings while forgetting that the draft will also bring players to the 2025 Commanders. No, I am not referring to the 2025 NFL Draft. I am actually referring to the 2024 NFL draft.
Yes, quarterback Jayden Daniels and cornerback Mike Sainristil were the big hits in their rookie seasons in 2024. It is also true that GM Adam Peters and HC Dan Quinn really believe the Commanders had several rookies in 2024 who provided evidence they would contribute even more in 2025.
A quick survey of those rookies reveals that the Commanders might have had quite a good draft in 2024. It takes about three years to know, but at glance, here are some quick considerations.
- DT Johnny Newton had two offseason surgeries last year, forcing him to be late in conditioning.
- WR Luke McCaffrey was only in his third season of even playing receiver (converted from QB).
- TE Ben Sinnott was disappointing, yes, but he also was behind Zach Ertz, who runs great routes, and John Bates, who is an excellent blocking tight end.
- OT Brandon Coleman could be a nice upgrade at RT since converting from guard at TCU. Coleman had a solid rookie season at left tackle.
- LB Jordan Magee could likely get some of Bobby Wagner's snaps in 2025.
- LB Dominique Hampton was basically "redshirted" (2024) and was being converted from safety to linebacker.
- DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste will be beefing up, attempting to add size to help him defend the run.
So, some Commanders fans who might be upset that GM Adam Peters has not solved all of the team's 2025 offseason needs can cheer up because Peters might have already drafted several players who could realistically have better seasons in 2025 than they did in 2024.
