Deebo Samuel, Commanders agree to new contract for 2025
The Washington Commanders traded for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, knowing only one year remained on his contract. However, Washington general manager Adam Peters worked with Samuel's agent to guarantee the receiver his $17 million salary for the 2025 season and also added a potential $3 million in incentives.

The first question is why would the Commanders guarantee Samuel's 2025 salary. This is a good-faith gesture from Peters and the Commanders. By guaranteeing Samuel's 2025 salary, Washington is counting on a motivated receiver at age 29 looking to cash in on another long-term deal. The two sides could agree to a new deal if things go well with Jayden Daniels and the Commanders next season.
The 49ers, who had salary cap issues, were against reworking the final year of Samuel's deal. Peters knows Samuel well, having been a part of the San Francisco front office when he was drafted. Peters was with the 49ers for five of Samuel's six NFL seasons.
Washington's problem is that Samuel's 2019 classmate, Terry McLaurin, also has a three-year deal expiring after the 2025 season. Many believe the Commanders will extend McLaurin at some point this offseason. Regardless of what happens with Samuel or anyone else, Washington understands McLaurin's importance on and off the field.
McLaurin and Samuel should both be heavily featured in 2025.
