More cause for concern in Brewers' pitching staff as a key member of the rotation leaves with injury
PHOENIX – It’s exactly what the Milwaukee Brewers didn’t want to see with one week left in spring training.
Tobias Myers left his start against the Los Angeles Angels with left oblique discomfort. The right-hander felt something as he threw a pitch in the second inning and immediately motioned to the Brewers’ dugout. Myers was then removed from the game after a brief talk with the training staff.
While further evaluation is ongoing, per the Brewers, Myers is the second projected member of the starting rotation to exit an outing with an oblique injury and third to get hurt this spring. DL Hall was placed on the 60-day injured list with a left lat strain and won’t be back until late May at the earliest. Ashby has yet to resume throwing and will be on the injured list to start the year.
Myers, 26, had a 3.00 ERA in 25 starts and 27 outings as a breakout rookie in 2024. He was pegged to be either Milwaukee’s No. 3 or 4 starter behind Freddy Peralta and Nestor Cortes on the opening day roster.
If Myers is to miss time, that would even further deplete the Brewers’ depth. Tyler Alexander and Elvin Rodriguez would be among the first options to replace him in the rotation. The Brewers are also still unclear on whether Jose Quintana will be ready for the start of the season after not signing until March.
Unclear if Nick Mears will start season on IL or not
Brewers reliever Nick Mears missed four days recently with an illness that caused him to lose nearly 10 pounds. He's been working to regain that weight, already up five pounds from where he was at the end of the sickness, but regaining all his strength is still a work in progress.
That puts his status for the opening day roster in question. Mears still needs to regain his strength and velocity, as well as get a back-to-back outing in before being regular-season ready. He could open the season in the injured list if not fully recovered by March 27.
