It was a rough Friday in East Lansing for the Michigan State baseball Big Ten opener against Illinois, with the Fighting Illini sweeping a double header. On Saturday, the two conference opponents finished their weekend series.
Michigan State dominated Saturday's matchup with Illinois, salvaging the series for themselves in a 14-4 run rule victory in eight innings. It is the first win over Illinois since 2017. MSU now improves to 17-10 (4-5 B1G) on the season.
Leading the way for Michigan State offensively was Sam Busch who finished the game 4-for-5 with 5 RBIs in the contest. JT Sokolove and Ryan McKay both went 3-for-5 in the game, while Will Shannon was 2-for-4.
Credit Tate Farquhar with the win, while Gannon Grundman and George Viebrock also added solid innings on the mound for the Spartans.
Up next for Michigan State is the 2025 Crosstown Showdown against the Lansing Lugnuts on Tuesday at Jackson Field in Lansing.
Following the exhibition with the Lugnuts, MSU will host Bowling Green on Wednesday before making a road trip to Bloomington for a weekend series against the Indiana Hoosiers.
