Justin Rose flirted with tying the first-round scoring record (63) on Thursday while shooting a 7-under par 65.
He'd have to shoot that 9-under round on Friday if he wants to set a new second-round low.
Three golfers have fired 8-under 64s in the second round, including 2025 participant Jason Day during the 2011 tournament. Day ultimately shot a 12-under 276, but finished second to Charl Schwartzel (14-under, 278) following the second-nine collapse by Rory McIlroy in the final round.
Jay Haas (1995) and Miller Barber (1979) also carded 64 in the second round.
Haas led after 36 holes but finished three strokes behind winner Ben Crenshaw after shooting an 11-under 277.
Barber couldn't find the magic the rest of the tournament, finishing T-12 with an even-par 72 and 4-over 76 in his final two rounds.
Barber was six-under on par 4 scoring during his round, a record he holds with Fred Couples (1996, second round) and Phil Mickelson (1996, first round), and he recorded 11 3s on his card, another record for one round.
Nick Price and Greg Norman hold the low scoring record (63) regardless of round. Norman's came the first round in 1996 and Price's was the third round in 1986.
Of course, Norman led the first three rounds but had the heartbreak of a 6-over 78 in the final round when he lost a 6-shot lead and Nick Faldo claimed the Green Jacket. Ironically, he also led the first three rounds of the 1986 before losing by a stroke to 46-year old Jack Nicklaus.
Price finished fifth, three shots behind. Haas placed a shot behind Price.
