Mason Greenwood returns early to Marseille training in bid to ‘prove dedication’ to Roberto De Zerbi

Mason Greenwood (23) has been under pressure from Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi in the last few weeks despite being one of the key players for Les Phocéens this season. In an effort to get back into favour with De Zerbi, Greenwood has reportedly returned to training early during the international break, according to La Provence.

With 15 goals, Greenwood is undergoing one of his best seasons statistically since his days at Manchester United – yet the Englishman’s work-rate has been questioned by his manager. “I expect more from him. He has to do more, because what he is currently showing is not enough,” said De Zerbi in a press conference attended by Get French Football News in February. “If he wants to achieve his ambition, he has to be more consistent, sacrifice more and be more determined.”

Greenwood was then dropped in Ligue 1 in Marseille’s defeat to Lens (0-1), before missing out in the starting line up for Le Classique against Paris Saint-Germain last Sunday. The 23-year-old has now taken an unexpected step to try and prove his dedication to De Zerbi. Despite being granted four days of rest to his squad members who were not called up for international duty, Greenwood decided to cut his break short and return to the training ground.

La Provence report the approach has been well-received by Roberto De Zerbi and the club’s hierarchy, who are hoping their top scorer can help the side reach their Champions League qualification objective by the end of the season.
