Parkinson dedicates Wrexham's Wycombe win to fans
Phil Parkinson dedicated Wrexham's win over Wycombe Wanderers to his side's supporters after a fan was taken to hospital during the contest.
The League One fixture was scoreless on 77 minutes when referee Ben Speedie halted proceedings due to the medical emergency in the away section at Adams Park.
Play was stopped for more than half an hour before Wrexham confirmed the supporter was in a "stable condition" prior to being taken to hospital.
Having left the field while the fan received medical attention, players returned for a 10-minute warm-up before play resumed - with striker Sam Smith scoring shortly after the restart to earn Wrexham victory in Buckinghamshire.
It saw Parkinson's side rise above Wycombe into second in League One, although the Chairboys have a game in hand over the Welsh club.
Wrexham boss Parkinson revealed after the match that his players discussed the supporter in the dressing room after the game has been delayed.
"Our thoughts are with him and his family," Parkinson said.
"We've been told he's in a stable condition and that's the most important news. It's terrible when something like that happens and football pales into insignificance.
"It was only when we found out that he was in a stable on his way to hospital that both sets of players wanted to come out and continue the game.
"We spoke about it in the dressing room that there was going to be another 20 minutes to play. Could we be the team that started the best and do it for our supporters. That's what we spoke about, and the lads certainly did that."
Wrexham's Hollywood co-owner Ryan McElhenney wrote on X: "We are all so proud of the lads and their massive win.
"But our hearts go out to our supporter who was rushed to the hospital. Wishing them the the best of recoveries. Up the town."
Following their loss to Wrexham, Wycombe wrote on X: "Our thoughts and best wishes are with the Wrexham supporter who was taken ill during today's game.
"We wish him all the best for his recovery."
Wycombe Wanderers boss Mike Dodds told BBC Three Counties Radio: "On behalf of anyone associated with the football club, we wish him well.
"The positive is that he's in a stable condition, and sometimes when that happens, it puts life and stresses into perspective."
Victory was Wrexham's fifth in six away league matches while Wycombe lost for only the second time in 17 home league fixtures.
And Parkinson lauded match winner Smith - whose third goal since joining Wrexham from Reading in January proved the difference between the sides.
"I thought he was a real threat, particularly in the second half," added Parkinson.
"He hit the post, really unlucky, could have had a penalty, but then he took his goal brilliantly, that's a real goal scorer's goal."
