March Madness Day 1: Complete wrap up of potential Sixers prospects
The Round of 64 of the men's NCAA Tournament got underway on Thursday with a full slate of games as March Madness began. The tournament is a time for young players to show what they can do and improve their draft stock for when the time comes in June.
The Philadelphia 76ers won't know if they will have a first-round pick until the lottery drawing on May 12 as their pick is only top 6 protected. As they sit at 23-46, the Sixers are working on trying to be in the best position possible in order to keep that pick.
With that being said, day 1 of the tournament featured some excellent options for Philadelphia in the second-round of the draft. Here is a complete wrap up of some potential prospects for Round 2 for the Sixers:
Johni Broome, Auburn
Stats: 14 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist in 83-63 win over Alabama State
Not the most dominant game for Broome, but he showed off his NBA level of skills. He shot 5-for-9 from the floor and was able to get in the paint and show off his footwork. He struggled a bit from the line, 4-for-9, and missed all three of his 3-pointers, but Broome is an NBA ready big man at this stage.
JT Toppin, Texas Tech
Stats: 12 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks in an 82-72 win over UNC-Wilmington
Toppin shot 6-for-8 from the floor and five of his 11 rebounds were on the offensive end. He had a lot of success in the paint and used his strength to be able to carve out space around the basket and finish. The Sixers could always use some athleticism off the bench and Toppin would be able to provide it.
Chaz Lanier, Tennessee
Stats: 29 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 assist in a 77-62 win over Wofford
Lanier had a fantastic tournament opener. He shot 11-for-22 from the floor and 6-for-13 from deep which shows off his ability to move without the basketball and shoot off the catch. He will likely be a specialist in the NBA, but if Lanier can bring this type of shooting ability to the league, then the Sixers would be in great shape with him off the bench.
March Madness Day 2 look ahead
If the Sixers can keep their first-round pick, here are some prospects to look out for on day 2:
- Duke star Cooper Flagg
- Duke wing player Kon Kneuppel
- Duke big man Khaman Maluach
- Illinois playmaker Kasparas Jakucionis
Additionally, here are some Round 2 options to look at as well:
- North Carolina wing player Ian Jackson
