Longhorns host coveted player in transfer portal defensive lineman

On Tuesday, the Longhorns will host Stanford edge rusher David Bailey. The California native is one of the most coveted players currently in the transfer portal. With the Longhorns looking to upgrade their defense, adding Bailey would be a huge move.

Over the last three years, Bailey has been a very productive player for Stanford. He recorded  111 total tackles, 14.5 sacks, and seven forced fumbles in that span. Due to his play, the talented edge rusher became one of the most sought-after players available at this point in the offseason the minute he decided it was time for a new chapter.

As the Longhorns look to make their best pitch to Bailey, they face competition. He will arrive in Austin fresh off a visit from Texas Tech. The Longhorns target also has a visit with UCLA in the works. The list of programs with interest will grow the longer he stays in the portal.

Over the last few months, the Longhorns have been busy adding talent to their roster. So far this offseason, their additions include Arkansas linebacker Brad Spence and three defensive linemen, Purdue's Cole Brevard, Ohio State's Hero Kanu, and North Carolina's Travis Shaw.

While the Longhorns' defense has many familiar faces returning, they must also replace a few very productive players. That includes Vernon Broughton, Alfred Collins, and Barryn Sorrell, who all entered the NFL Draft. For head coach Steve Sarkisian, the focus has been on ensuring there is no drop-off.

" Some of the transfers defensively, Cole Brevard, Hero Kanu, Travis Shaw, and Brad Spence, all played significant roles at the schools they came from," Sarkisian said in early March. "So it's easy to look at numbers and say, 'Hey, we've got a ton to replace.' We do, but we also have some guys and some key ingredients that played some critical roles for us last season that I think will be impactful for us this fall."

No decision date is set for Bailey, but the Longhorns are hoping to be at the top of his list.
