LOCAL ROUNDUP: HPU men land former GDS standout Young

HIGH POINT — High Point University men’s basketball has landed another transfer portal commit. And he’s someone very familiar with the Triad.

Jaydon Young will join the Panthers next season. He played the last two seasons at Virginia Tech following a standout career at Greensboro Day. He is also the son of Wesleyan Christian boys coach Victor Young.

Young, who scored over 2,000 in his high school career, was selected all-conference four times, all-state three times and conference player of the year three times while playing for Freddy Johnson at Greensboro Day. The Bengals won the NCISAA 3A championship in 2023.

He played in 58 games and started in 10 with the Hokies, averaging 5.3 points in 16 minutes per game — including 8.1 points in 22 minutes as a sophomore. He had 64 assists and 24 steals over his two years, in which Virginia Tech went 32-34 overall, including 20-22 in the ACC, and reached the NIT his freshman year.

Young joins a High Point team coming off its first Big South tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. And while the Panthers will lose a handful of notable pieces, they’ve already had some notable commitments — including Rob Martin, an all-conference guard from Southeast Missouri State.
