Liverpool captain Van Dijk reveals ‘progress’ on contract talks

Virgil van Dijk has revealed there has been ‘progress’ in talks with Liverpool over a new contract with the club.

Van Dijk’s current contract expires at the end of the campaign and there has been no agreement reached on an extension. The Dutch defender will turn 34 in July, but has been an integral part of Liverpool’s title challenge under Arne Slot this season.

Van Dijk has started all 31 league games for the Reds, who are 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool need a maximum of 11 points from their final seven games to be crowned champions.

However, the contract situations of Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have dominated the headlines in recent months. The key trio are all approaching free agency, but Van Dijk has offered an encouraging update on his future.

The Liverpool captain reaffirmed his commitment and ‘love’ for the club. He revealed that progress has been made between the Reds and his representatives over a new contract.

“There is progress, yeah,” he said on a new deal.

Asked whether that meant he would be staying at Anfield, Van Dijk added: “I don’t know. We’ll see. Listen, these are internal discussions and we’ll see.

“I love the club, I love the fans and they were there for us again and we wanted to reward them.

“But I want them to be there Sunday again (at home to West Ham United) and make the stadium an amazing venue like always for us.”
