Lions formally submit 3 NFL rule changes, including a big change in defensive penalties
The Detroit Lions have formally submitted three rule changes to the NFL for consideration and adoption. One involves the action on the field, another deals with postseason seeding and scheduling, and a third deals with injured reserve and roster manipulation rules.
The first is one that would appear to immediately benefit the Lions' own defense, specifically cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold. In a proposed amendment to Rule 8 of Section 4 of the playing rules bylaws, the Lions seek to eliminate the automatic first down that is awarded to the offense for the defensive penalties of holding and illegal contact.
Playoff seeding has favored division winners over wild card teams even if the wild card team has a better record, but the Lions are fixing to change that, too. The Lions proposed to allow the wild card team to be seeded higher than a division winner with a worse regular-season record. In 2024, that would have allowed the Vikings and Commanders to be higher-seeded as wild cards than division winners Tampa Bay and Los Angeles. The higher-seeded team hosts the playoff game, so it's a significant change.
The last rule deals with the 90-man roster and how players injured during training camp and preseason are treated. The Lions want players placed on injured reserve before the 53-man roster cutdown to be exempted from counting against the 90-man roster.
The league votes on the proposals at the NFL's annual meeting, which takes place March 30-Spril 2nd in Florida.
