Lawrence County fends off Russellville, takes consecutive area wins

Mar. 19—MOULTON — A little less than a week after their first area win of the season, the Lawrence County Red Devils made it two consecutive on Tuesday night with an 8-4 victory over Russellville.

After a 16-2 run-rule win over West Point last Thursday, this victory marks wins over both the Red Devils' Class 5A, Area 15 opponents.

A strong second-inning burst ended up being the difference in the game against Russellville. Lawrence County scored five runs in the bottom of the second but then got outscored by Russellville 4-3 in the rest of the game.

Head coach Will Inman was happy with the win but thought the Red Devils left something to be desired.

"We need to be more locked in; we need to be more focused," Inman said. "I think they knew they were going to win today, and I want them to have confidence and have that energy. But they didn't play with that today."

Lawrence County's Andee Brooke McKay was responsible for four Red Devil runs in the win. The senior knocked in runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, finishing 3-for-4 from the plate with a double and four RBIs.

"I feel like we just got comfortable", McKay said. "We've never really been as good as we are now, and I think we've just gotten comfortable."

Inman was upset because he thinks the Red Devils have "deep-run potential" and saw this performance as slippage from the rest of their play this season.

Now out to an 18-6 record and 2-0 in area play, Lawrence County opened up the season hot. In February they went 10-2, and since the start of March they've gone 8-4 in regular season play.

"We're not off to a good start to the middle of our season. If we play like we did today, we'll lose our next five or six games," he said. "We'll get it back and correct it, but today was not a good game."

In the game versus Russellville, the Lawrence County offense started without a hitch. The Red Devils scored five in the bottom of the second, then two in the following inning to go into the fourth period up 7-0 on Russellville.

The Red Devils capitalized on Russellville errors all game. In the first three innings, Lawrence County swiped five total bags and had three runs scored on Russellville errors.

"If we wouldn't have done that, we wouldn't have scored today, because we sure didn't hit," Inman said. "We just didn't hit very well, and we were lucky to survive today. A wins a win, even an ugly win."

Russellville then responded with a pair of runs in the fourth inning and another pair in the sixth. However, Lawrence County held them scoreless in the top of the seventh, securing the win.

"I think we should have played a lot better than we did," McKay said. "We lowered the competition down to our opponents' level. We weren't playing like we normally do."

In the game for Lawrence County, McKay led with four RBIs while batting 3-for-4 with a double. Alivia Terry was 2-for-4 with a double. Tilleigh Allen, Addison Plaxco, Bella Cross and Alyce LouAllen all had an RBI on a base hit each.
