Glory Days: Canal Winchester, Fisher Catholic win the county invitational of 2005
In 2005, the Fairfield County Invitational was won by the Canal Winchester boys and Fisher Catholic girls, but there were many individual standouts including one Falcon who won three events.
Canal Winchester won only three events but they had two finish in the top four places of six events to garner 155.5 points. For much of the middle part of the event, Berne Union held onto the second place, but they couldn't hold the spot.
That was because of Amanda-Clearcreek and Fairfield Union who tied for second with 97 points. What made the Falcons' position remarkable was that they got the tie due to one athlete.
It was on the strength of David Boyer's win in three events including setting a new 400-meter dash record.
"That popped us up there," Falcons coach Rick Mettle said in the May 4, 2005, Lancaster Eagle-Gazette. "I thought we'd finish third with a good finish. To be tied for second, we're really pleased."
Boyer was named Athlete of the Meet after finishing with a time of 50.3 in the 400. It broke the previous record of 50.8 set by Amanda Clearcreek's Todd Helber in 2001, and tied a year later by Dustin Holm of Millersport.
Berne Union finished fourth (89 points), followed by Millersport (69), Bloom-Carroll (46) and Fisher Catholic (22.5).
On the girls' side, Fisher Catholic freshman Katie Griffin led the Irish to their win with 167 points. Griffin won the long jump, 200-meter dash and finished second in both hurdles races.
Bloom-Carroll was second with 115.5 points, followed by Canal Winchester (110.5 points), Berne Union (70 points), followed by Fairfield Union and Millersport (40 points) and Amanda Clearcreek (31 points).
Griffin ran 27.7 seconds to win the 200, edging out Berne Union's Andrea Lower.
