Late goal spoils Hartford Athletic’s home opener as El Paso wins, 2-1

A late goal spoiled the home opener for Hartford Athletic on Saturday, as El Paso Locomotive won at Trinity Health Stadium, 2-1.

Wahab Ackwei’s goal in the 86th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave El Paso its first win of the season. Hartford dropped to 0-0-3 on the year.

Mamadou Dieng scored the lone goal of the game for Hartford in the 29th minute. El Paso opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a goal from Roberto Avila.

Hartford lost the season opener at Lexington SC, 2-0, on March 8 and were beaten 1-0 at Pittsburgh last week. Athletic did win its US Open Cup game against the New York Shockers, 3-0, on March 18, but that game doesn’t count towards the USL standings.

Hartford will face the Portland Hearts of Pine in the second round of the US Open Cup next week and will return to Trinity Health Stadium for its next home game against Indy XI on April 12.
