Kirby Smart calls 2024 by far his staff's best season
Georgia's 2024 season, while featuring an SEC title and a College Football Playoff appearance with a first-round bye, ultimately fell short of expectations with a CFP quarterfinal loss, leaving a feeling of what could have been.
Compared to their recent national championship runs, and even the 2023 season, the 2024 Georgia team showed a noticeable decline in execution. Despite this perception, Kirby Smart would emphasize the significant accomplishments of the 2024 season.
During an interview with college football analyst Josh Pate, Kirby Smart shared his perspective on the 2024 season.
"Best coaching job we have done by far 100%," Smart said. "We were not better than some of the years previous and we had twice the schedule some of the years previous. So, to the naysayers, to the on-lookers, to the people that don't know, I respect everyone's opinion. You can have an opinion, you can do what you want with it, I know football. And I know the level and I know the level of schedule we had to play and I know the roster we did it with and I know the injuries we had. By far and away the best job our staff and our organization has done, easily, to go through the gauntlet, number one to get into the SEC championship was an accomplishment with that schedule."
Smart expressed significant satisfaction with the 2024 season, acknowledging it fell short of Georgia's usual high standards. However, he reiterated that the challenging schedule played a substantial role and Georgia's significant injuries hurt UGA's 2024 season.
"I was very pleased with what we got out of our team. And it was below the standard, statistically, in a lot of areas," added Smart. "But a lot of that had to do with the schedule we played.
While Georgia faces a demanding schedule in 2025, they'll benefit from home-field advantage against Texas, Alabama, and Ole Miss, a notable contrast to last season's road encounters. They also hope to see improvements across their entire team.
