Jonathon Cooper's restructure wasn't out of the blue
News broke on Friday that the Denver Broncos restructured pass rusher Jonathon Cooper's contract, a move that saved the team $3.2 million in 2025 salary cap space.
We noted on Friday that the restructure did not necessarily mean a move was on the way for Denver. That notion has been confirmed by KUSA-TV's Mike Klis.
"Easy now," Klis tweeted Friday. "When Broncos signed OLB Jonathon Cooper to 4-yr, $54M extension in [November], there was a clause stating Broncos could convert $3.2M of $4M roster bonus due March 17 (Monday) into signing bonus. Broncos exercised that clause. Relax and enjoy March Madness."
So it wasn't a decision made quickly to free up space -- it was essentially a procedural move that was greenlit in November and executed in March.
The Broncos now have about $17.4 million in available salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com, but some of that will go toward the team's rookie class. A few more budget signings could be on the way, but Denver's splash deals are likely done.
