Ja’Kobi Lane steps up as leader in USC’s receiver room

2024 was a breakout season for USC wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane. After seeing limited action as a freshman in 2023, Lane broke out this past season, emerging as the team’s go-to red zone option. His 12 receiving touchdowns were more than double that of any other Trojan, while his 525 receiving yards were good for second on the team.

Now, Lane enters 2025 as one of the go-to guys in USC’s receiver room. And he has embraced the role, trying to step up as more of a leader both on and off the field.Following Thursday’s practice, head coach Lincoln Riley discussed Lane’s emergence as a leader in the wide receiver room this spring.

“[Lane] does have an infectious energy, a competitive energy, and it affects our football team,” Riley said. “And so I think he’s got some big goals for this team, and he wants to be a leader and be someone on this team that we can count on, and he knows the path to that is more consistency in all areas.

”So he’s doing a lot of things better than he ever has. He’s got great intent for it, and he continues to grow and progress. Were just going to need him to stay on that track.”

USC fans are hoping that Lane will continue to build off of his 2024 breakout season and emerge as one of the top wide receivers in the country in 2025.
