Intriguing former Bengals player cut, heads to free agency
A former Cincinnati Bengals veteran hit free agency over the weekend after his team cut ties after roster moves elsewhere in the AFC.
Saturday, the Tennessee Titans announced they cut cornerback Chidobe Awuzie just a year after signing him to a three-year contract.
It's a surprising move because if the Titans call it a post-June 1 cut, it still puts $10 million in dead money on the books.
It's also an intriguing move from a Bengals perspective. Awuzie played in just eight games last year and prior to following Brian Callahan to Tennessee, played with the Bengals from 2021-2023.
Awuzie wasn't brought back last season as the Bengals underwent a youth movement and weren't playing in his money range on the market. But this offseason, he might make more sense as a depth option for a return, should both parties have an interest.
Whereas Bengals free agent Mike Hilton is a slot man and that's crowded on the depth chart right now, Awuzie could be depth on the boundary similar to Eli Apple a few years ago. That is, provided he wants to take on that type of role.
