The Hoosier State Relays indoor track and field state championships were held on Saturday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Fall Creek Pavilion at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. Muncie-area schools were well-represented with six schools — Blue River Valley, Delta, Jay County, Shenandoah, Wapahani and Yorktown — sending qualifiers.
Yorktown competed in the large schools session Saturday morning, while the other five competed in the afternoon's small schools session. Here are the results for the Muncie-area athletes who competed at the Hoosier State Relays indoor state championships, going alphabetically by school:
Blue River Valley
Blue River Valley sent three Vikings athletes to the HSR state championships. Junior Brayden Swoveland competed in two events: the boys 60-meter hurdles and high jump. He was the last of eight qualifiers in the first round of the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.62 seconds, then placed sixth in the final with a time of 8.59 seconds. In the high jump, Swoveland placed sixth, clearing the bar at six feet, two inches on his second attempt.
Senior Charlee Gibson, a Southern Indiana cross country signee, placed 23rd in the girls 3200 with a time of 12 minutes and 17.18 seconds. Senior Jacob Fox placed 21st in the boys shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 5 3/4 inches.
Delta
Delta had the most state qualifiers out of the Muncie-area schools. The Eagles sent 20 student-athletes who competed across 12 different events.
Senior Marcus Bright was the reigning indoor state champion in the 60 hurdles and looked primed to defend his crown with a school-record run of 8.13 seconds in preliminaries. Although he ran a similar 8.15 in the final, Bright placed third this time around. Bright also joined Carter Jackson, Kamryn Wilson and Grey Backus on the Eagles' 4x200 team, which also placed third with a time of 1:32.41.
Junior Jillian Barr was the standout for the Delta girls. She finished fourth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.34 seconds, breaking the Delta school record for the third time this season. In the long jump, Barr placed third with an 18-foot jump. She also anchored the girls 4x200 team that improved its school record with a time of 1:50.64.
Jay County
Jay County saw qualifiers in three events — senior Adam Alig in the boys 60 hurdles, senior Jordyn Hutzler in the girls shot put, and its boys 4x200 team.
Alig placed 13th in the 60 hurdles prelims with a time of 8.68 seconds, and Hutzler placed 18th in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 3 1/4 inches. The boys 4x200 team of Gabe Pinkerton, Alig, Caden Gambill and John Cook placed 21st with a time of 1:38.83.
Shenandoah
Shenandoah had a strong day, especially its girls relay teams. The Raiders' 4x400 team of Memorie Idlewine, Kayci Hill, Lydia Waggener and Grace Lee placed second with a time of 4:07.87. The same group also ran the 4x200, placing 11th with a time of 1:50.49.
Waggener also competed in two individual events — she placed 18th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.27 seconds and 14th in the long jump with a distance of 16 3/4. Meanwhile, Hill competed in the high jump, finishing 18th after clearing the bar at 4-10 on her second attempt. Shenandoah also saw senior Haley Hughes compete in the girls shot put, where ...
