HIGHLIGHTS: No. 4 Rambelles softball sweeps WNMU with both a shutout and walk off in Saturday’s double-header
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Angelo State Softball is back at home this weekend. The No. 4 ranked ladies with two double-headers against Western and Eastern New Mexico, opening the weekend with a shutout vs the Mustangs.
The Rambelles ace Cheyenne Floyd got the start for game one. Floyd missing last weekend’s two road contests with an illness. The star pitcher was back to herself today in game one recording five shutout innings only allowing two hits with nine strikeouts including the first five batters faced, to move to 12-2 on the season.
The Rambelles in game two struck first in the 4th on an attempted double steal thrown out at second allowing the runner home. But the Mustangs bats came alive at the right time as winds blew up to 30 mph out to left field. A three run home run by the Mustangs was followed up with another two run shot both to left field carried by the wind to put Western New Mexico up 5-1. The Rambelles would give up two more hits at the top of the final inning before stopping the bleeding to go into the home half of the inning down four. The Rambelles bottom half of the order was up and would do exactly what was needed. Lauren De La Cruz started things off with a double to left before Abby Brand in the nine spot would send a two run shot to deep left to pull the Belles within two, no outs, top of the order due up. Erin Plunkett walked, Layonna Applin singled to center field(a wild pitch would advance Plunkett and Applin to 2nd and third). Tatianna Trotter would step to the plate, no outs down two and would draw the walk. A bases loaded walk would make it a 5-4 game, before a wild pitch would score Applin from third to tie the game at five. Zoey De Baca then stepped to the plate, one out, runners on third and second, with Head Coach Travis Scott giving the signal he wanted at the right time. De Baca would lay a bunt, scoring Trotter to walk this game off in dramatic fashion for the Rambelles.
Lauren De La Cruz and Abby Brand both deserve a nod for their clutch performances both recording their only hits in their final at bat when their team needed them the most. Layonna Applin also claimed player of the game as well for her performance. A dominate effort to complete the shutout game one but a team effort to complete the days sweep via the comeback.
The Rambelles move to 24-4 on the season and are back in action Sunday at 2 and 4:30pm for their double-header vs Eastern New Mexico.
