Heroes of the Deep: Lofa Tatupu’s Impact Beyond the Field
Seattle, WA - At every Kraken home game, an extraordinary moment occurs during the first period’s commercial break. As the arena darkens, a single spotlight shines over section 14, accompanied by the powerful chords of Pearl Jam’s “Given to Fly.” The crowd rises in anticipation, their eyes fixed on the jumbotron, where the words “Heroes of the Deep” appear, signaling a moment of recognition unlike any other.
The Heroes of the Deep is a special honor bestowed by the Kraken Unity Fund, a collaboration between the Seattle Kraken’s One Roof Foundation and the team's ownership group, which was led by the late David Bonderman and Samantha Holloway. Launched at the start of the 2022-23 season, the award celebrates individuals who are making a profound impact on their communities. These honorees have demonstrated "exceptional dedication to transforming lives, building resiliency, and uniting the Pacific Northwest."
Each Hero receives a grant of $32,000, a symbolic amount reflecting the Kraken’s status as the 32nd NHL franchise. This grant is a testament to the importance of community engagement, and it enables recipients to continue their vital work.
On March 31st, during the Kraken’s final contest between the Dallas Stars, the spotlight fell once again. Fans erupted into cheers as the Hero of the Deep was revealed: Lofa Tatupu, former linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks.
Tatupu, who played six seasons (2005-2011) with the Seahawks, became a household name thanks to his on-field accomplishments. Over his first three seasons, he led the Seahawks in tackles and earned three consecutive Pro Bowl selections (2005-2007). In 2007, he was honored with an All-Pro selection. His impressive career led to a six-year contract extension with the Seahawks in 2008, making him one of the highest-paid linebackers in the NFL at the time.
Yet, it’s not just his football legacy that earned Lofa this prestigious recognition. His deep commitment to the community, particularly his advocacy for Special Olympics Washington, has made a lasting impact. Lofa has been a dedicated supporter of athletes with intellectual disabilities, often participating in events, engaging with fans, and raising awareness for this incredible cause. His passion for the Special Olympics is evident in his actions, as he uses his platform to elevate and empower athletes, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve. Lofa, who spent his formative years in Massachusetts, is the son of the late Mosi Tatupu, a legendary linebacker for the New England Patriots who played from 1978 to 1990 before transitioning to coaching. Mosi was beloved by fans not only for his on-field performance but also for his active participation in local community events—a trait he clearly passed down to his son.
