Hamlin falls in semifinals; Mobridge-Pollock, Sioux Valley bounce back in consolation semis
SPEARFISH — Hamlin's bid to make it back to the championship of the state Class A girls basketball tournament ended with a semifinal loss to top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian on Friday.
Two other area schools, Mobridge-Pollock and Sioux Valley, each won consolation semfinal games and will play for the consolation championship at 2:45 p.m. Central on Saturday.
In other games on Saturday, Mount Vernon-Plankinton takes on Wagner for seventh place at 1 p.m., Hamlin battles Dakota Valley for third place at 7 p.m. and Christian and Mahpiya Luta square off in the championship at 8:45 p.m.
Friday's Games
Semifinal (Mahpiya Luta 72, Dakota Valley 56) — Unbeaten Mahpiya Luta built a 39-26 halftime lead and held off a second-half comeback bid by Dakota Valley.
Ashlan Carlow-Blount led Mahpiya Luta with 23 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists. Jodene Big Crow-Hunter scored 25 points and Mya Mills 10.
Aubree Worden notched 23 points, Ella Otten 14 and Cameryn Sommervold 11 for Dakota Valley. Sommervold also hauled in 11 rebounds.
Semifinal (Sioux Falls Christian 44, Hamlin 33) — A strong defensive effort and a second-half surge helped Christian post their second 11-point win over Hamlin this season. Hamlin led 21-20 at halftime for SFC took over.
Emery Lems and Lezlei Setzer led a balanced attack for SFC with eight points apiece. Setzer also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Addie and Paxton Neuendorf each scored seven points and Addie Steffensen six for Hamlin, which was trying to reach the championship game for the fourth time in five years. The Chargers made only eight of 47 field-goal attempts for 17 percent.
Maya Nelson scored the opening basket of the second half to give SFC a lead it never relinquished. Ruth Dvoracek's field goal with two seconds left in the third quarter capped a 13-3 spurt and gave SFC a 33-24 lead heading in the fourth quarter.
Hamlin did trim the lead to five on Addie Neuendorf's field goal with 4:02 left but got no closer. Starters Issie Steffensen, A. Neuendorf and Jo Steffensen each fouled out during five-second span in the final minute.
Consolation Semifinal (Mobridge-Pollock 50, Mount Vernon-Plankinton 40) — Blake Thompson's 18 points and 12 rebounds helped the Tigers bounce back for a loss in their tourney opener. Charley Henderson chipped in with 11 points, Faith Heil eight points and Tegan Konold seven points and six assists.
Reagan Rus (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Taryn Hegg (eight points) led MVP.

Consolation Semifinal (Sioux Valley 56, Wagner 46) — The Cossacks also bounce back to win. Keyra Kruse led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Amari Ward tallied 12 points, Talya Vincent 11 and Kailey Cradduck seven points and nine rebounds.
Ashlynn Koupal's 24 points and Mateya Bruguier's 12 topped Wagner.
