Glory Days: Maloney strikes out 11, throws one-hitter to open 1990 season
How about a one-hitter to open up your season?
That is exactly the feat that Ryan Maloney had in 1990 as Lancaster opened up against Zanesville.
According to the April 6, 1990, Lancaster Eagle-Gazette article, Maloney struck out 11 in a 10-3 win over the Blue Devils.
"I was nervous," Maloney said after the game.
He faced the minimum number of batters through the first three innings.
"I thought Ryan did a pretty good job," Lancaster coach Lennie Conrad said in the article. "We're happy. You're always happy with a win. But, likewise, I think we can play better. We got a little sloppy."
Maloney walked seven in his sevin-inning sting.
"I had trouble finding the spots in the late innings," Maloney said. "I was tired, but conditioning will come later in the season."
Lancaster's third inning was the difference. Chad Spired and Donnie Miller singled and Chad Swackhammer singled to bring them both home. Then junior Tim Henwood, who was the designated hitter, came up and hit a two-run homer that put them up 4-0.
They added three in the fourth when Shawn Stump opened the inning with a single. Jimmy Justus doubled, putting runners at second and third. Miller signaled home both runners. Swackhammer followed with a single which had runners on the corners. The Gales tried a double steal and Swackhmmer got caught in a rundown as he broke for second, but Miller was able to steal home.
The Gales added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Zanesville's only hit came in the fifth inning with two outs when Jon Ohlinger doubled.
"Maloney's an awful good pitcher," said Zanesville coach Tom Cover. "We haven't seen anyone of that velocity yet. Plus he's got a pretty nice breaking pitch."
