Lumberjacks kick off season at Northwoods Opener
Mar. 24—BEMIDJI — The Lumberjacks started the 2025 season on the right note.
The Bemidji High School track and field team kicked off the 2025 season at the Gillett Wellness Center on Saturday, welcoming Crosby-Ironton, Fertile-Beltrami, United North Central, TrekNorth and Alexandria Community Christian for the Northwoods Opener.
BHS dominated the event. The Bemidji boys earned a team score of 251 for first place, while the girls finished atop their competition with a team score of 171.
On the boys side, Taylen Schemerhorn captured first place in the 60-meter dash finals (7.45 seconds), followed by fellow Lumberjacks Dawson Degelder (7.47), Noah Wilson (7.58) and Vinny Nelson (7.61).
Schemerhorn led the way in the 200 meters, earning a time of 24.49 seconds. Bemidji's Jeron Huseby (25.33), Nelson (25.45), Isaac Stone (25.87) and Trenten Fredriksen-Holm (25.88) rounded out the top five.
Caleb Knott grabbed first in the 400 meters for BHS, earning a time of 54.51. Crosby-Ironton's Ezra Jacobson came in second (57.19) and Fredriksen-Holm ended up in third (58.81).
The Lumberjacks' Blake Dewitt came away with a second-place finish in the 800 meters (2:17.19). Sean Ryan Aylesworth took third place in the mile with a time of 5:38.05. Two Lumberjacks rounded out the top three finishers in the 60-meter hurdles: Ryland Olson (11.16) and Cedrick Johnson (11.25).
BHS came away with first across all three relay races. Schemerhorn, Degelder, Rhys Sneide and Noah Wilson teamed up at the 4x200 relay for a time of 1:38.49. In the 4x400, Tanner Johnson, Kyle Millar, Deven Bentler and Zaden Graf tallied a time of 4:07.00. Finally, in the 4x800, Dewitt, Millar, Johnson and Knott combined for a time of 8:56.69.
Bemidji's Kolton Meyer finished first in the shot put (44-3.5), followed by Tanner Whipple (40-3.5) in third. Dreyden Lauderbaugh wound up in third in the high jump (5-4). Austin Heim notched a first-place finish in the pole vault (12-3) for Bemidji.
BHS also earned first place in the long jump, courtesy of Jayden Bondy (18-7). Bemidji's John Breczinski took third (15-10.5).
On the girls side, Addison Hill (8.89) and Kaia Christopher (8.96) took second and third, respectively, in the 60-meter dash. Bemidji's Sydney Beise (1:11.65) and Hannah Quinn (1:13.96) also took silver and bronze in the 400.
In the 1600, Bemidji's Chloe Derby (5:54.76) and Abigail Olson (6:17.96) earned first and second, respectively.
BHS also took the top two spots in the 60 hurdles, led by Aubrey DeWitt (11.14) and Lola VanEngelenhoven (11.30).
In the shot put, Samantha Cox (31-1.75) and Elizabeth Youso (30-7.5) finished first and second, respectively. Sandwiched between the Falcons' Miley Fladhammer (4-8) and the Rangers' Cailynn Gaughan (4-6), Bemidi's Julia Barry earned second place in the high jump (4-6).
In the long jump, the Lumberjacks' Evie Bjornrud (13-8) and Mahalia Knott (13-5) finished first and second, respectively. TrekNorth's Noli Londgren (13-2) ended up just behind in third.
