Mistakes cost Mavs in baseball season opener
Mar. 17—MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake High School baseball team opened the 2025 season with a 5-2 loss to Mt. Si (Snoqualmie) on Friday afternoon.
Moses Lake coach Donnie Lundgren told his team after the game that they came within one run on multiple occasions, but that the errors cost them.
"We made too many mistakes. When you make mistakes in baseball, good things don't happen," he said. "Our focus wasn't there, and we're going to work on our focus and continue to get better in all the fundamentals."
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after miscommunication between Moses Lake's pitcher and catcher led to a dropped ball; the runner eventually scored. Mt. Si pushed the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning.
Moses Lake cut that lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on hits by Jonny Purcell and Jacoby Fulbright, followed by a walk that loaded the bases. The Mt. Si pitcher then walked another batter, cutting the lead to 2-1. That left the bases still loaded, but the Mavericks failed to score.
Mt. Si widened its lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning, with a double scoring a runner who was on base due to a missed tag by Moses Lake. The Mavericks loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth but didn't score.
Moses Lake's Cruz Martinez stole home in the sixth inning to get the Mavericks within one, 3-2, but two doubles by Mt. Si scored two runners in the top of the seventh for the final score of 5-2.
"We're young," Lundgren said. "Our freshmen did a good job; our seniors didn't do a very good job. Hopefully, we can work some kinks out."
Lundgren said the early season is the time to work on those lessons.
"Baseball is a tough game to play. It wasn't a lack of effort or anything else; it was just a mistake, and everybody makes mistakes. We're going to correct them and execute better."
