Roma tactician Claudio Ranieri reiterated that he didn’t lie when he ruled out Gian Piero Gasperini. The Giallorossi are currently focusing on four other options. The latest entry to their shortlist is Patrick Vieira, who’s having a solid spell at Genoa, Sky informs.

The former Arsenal star joins Stefano Pioli, Maurizio Sarri, and Vincenzo Montella among the main candidates. The ex-Lazio gaffer is the only one currently out of contract. Instead, Massimiliano Allegri and Roberto Mancini are more distant options.

The Genoa bass has gained support within the Roma brass for his good work in Liguria. He has tallied 7 wins, 7 draws, and 5 losses in 19 matches, lifting the team that was heavily involved in the relegation struggle before he came to town, and his experience at a relatively young age. He has already managed in four different leagues, given his turns in the MLS with New York City FC, in Ligue 1 with Nice and Strasbourg, and with Crystal Palace in England.

According to Calciomercato, the higher-ups like Montella the most, as, like Ranieri, he has a strong pre-existing bond with the team. However, he’d like to guide Turkey to the 2026 World Cup.

Our Take on the Next Roma Coach

It looks like they won’t do anything too out of the box or flamboyant, which would be a minor surprise but not necessarily a negative. Pioli, Mancini, and Allegri are fairly similar to their current gaffer, but they are also quite expensive salary-wise. Montella has massively improved his reputation away from Serie A and would best embody what they are looking for. Vieira has been excellent at Genoa, but his tactics are very conservative, and he’s never been in a big team.
