Generational stars: Vote for the Patriot Ledger's H.S. Boys Basketball Player of the Year
All-Scholastics for the 2024-25 winter season are right around the corner, but before that, we need some assistance from our readers.
This year, we will be leaning on our readership to help pick our players of the year in each sport.
Similar to past years with our Male and Female Athletes of the Year, readers will have a voice in who the players of the year are for this year under the new format. This year however, the pool of elite players has been narrowed down even farther, a challenge in and of itself. We limited each school to a maximum of one candidate.
Vote for our High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Reader votes will make up 20% of the tally, with our four staff reporters (Eric McHugh, Jason Snow, Ryan Vermette and Chris McDaniel) making up the rest of the vote.
The poll
The candidates
Tyler Anderson, Blue Hills
The junior guard/forward was the Mayflower Athlete Conference Large School Division's Player of the Year. Anderson, a three-time league all-star, averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and 6 steals per game. He had nine 20-point games this season and led the Warriors to a 14-6 record this winter with an appearance in the Div. 4 state touunament.
Jake Brilliant, Marshfield
The 5-11 guard led the Rams to 17 wins this winter, including a Div. 1 state tournament win. The senior led the Rams in points (15.4 per game) and rebounds (6.2) was second in steals. He connected on 40.2% of his shots from 3-point range. Coach Bob Fisher called Brilliant's Marshfield's 'engine and pulse.'
Vinny Cafarelli, Plymouth South
The senior led the Panthers to the program's first state tournament win since 2001. The shooting guard doubled most of his averages to 16 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game. A Patriot League All-Star, Cafarelli helped the Panthers reached the tournament three consecutive seasons. Also a stout defender, Cafarelli had nine 20-point games this winter.
Ronan Coffey, Norwell
The author of the biggest shot in Norwell basketball history (a 3-pointer to send the state final into overtime at the buzzer), Coffey led Norwell to a 25-0 record and the program's first state championship. The South Shore League Sullivan Division Player of the Year averaged 18 points, 10 assists and 2 steals per game. He capped his career with a 30-point game in a state final win over Old Rochester Regional, including 8 of Norwell's 10 points in OT.

Owen Kelly, Braintree
Braintree coach Bob Crook says Kelly's average of 12 points per game "does not begin to do justice to his impact." The captain was the winner of Bill Erwin Award for Braintree's top player. The two-year starter was the MVP of the Comcast Tournament. Kelly helped the Wamps win their first tournament game since 2017 and win the Bay State Conference Herget Division title for the first time since 1994.
Sam Larsen, Cohasset
After missing half of his junior season due to injury, Larsen returned to the floor in style. The 6-3 senior led the Skippers to 18 wins and a trip to the Div. 4 Elite Eight. Larsen averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds per game. The South Shore League All-Star had 14 games of 20 or more points. Larsen was a four-year varsity player and three-year starter.
Kobe Nguyen, North Quincy
The senior captain became the sixth player in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark. As a guard, Nguyen averaged 17.3 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists per game. He helped lead a young team to the Patriot League Fisher Division title. He tied a program record with 8 3-pointers in a 34-point effort against Madison Park. The four-year starter and two-time captain set a program record for most varsity games played (90).
Tyler Vincent, Hanover
The senior earned high praise from Hanover coach Nick Hannigan: "Tyler is as good a guard as I've had in my 13 years as a coach." Vincent averaged 15.4 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds per game. Vincent scored 31 points in his final high school game, a 57-52 loss to Norwell in the Div. 3 Elite Eight. The two-time Patriot League All-Star graduates with 972 career points.
Voting ends on April 1.
