Former Eagles No. 2 pick could be the Browns bridge QB if they don't sign Russell Wilson
The Cleveland Browns traded for Eagles backup quarterback Kenny Pickett earlier this month and could be looking to add a former No. 2 overall pick to the roster. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that Carson Wentz and the Browns have a mutual interest in the former Eagles star "being the bridge quarterback" for the franchise as they pivot away from Deshaun Watson.
A league source told Cleveland.com that the Browns and Wentz, 32, “definitely have mutual interest” this season in him becoming their veteran bridge quarterback. It’s apparently contingent upon them signing Russell Wilson, who visited last week.
Wilson, 36, is expected to choose between the Browns, Giants and Steelers.
Pittsburgh and the New York Giants are reportedly also awaiting word on former Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, further complicating things. If Rodgers and Wilson sign elsewhere, Cleveland.com reports that Wentz could be the franchise's starter while head coach Kevin Stefanski develops Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders at No. 2 overall in April's NFL draft.
Last season, Wentz signed a one-year, $3.325 million deal to back up Patrick Mahomes and have another shot at a Super Bowl ring. The objective for the Browns isn't very clear because Cleveland acquired former Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett in a trade with Philadelphia for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft. Pickett, 15-10 as a starter, including 14-10 with the Steelers, has been told he’ll have an opportunity to compete for the starting job.
The Browns would be Wentz’s sixth team in as many years and a dramatic fall for a quarterback who many envisioned winning multiple MVPs, earning All-Pro honors, and some MVP votes in the 2017 season that was derailed after he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 14.
Nick Foles led the Eagles to a 41-33 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII, and Wentz was gone two years later.
