Former Bloomington North basketball standout hits transfer portal
JQ Roberts is testing the waters.
The former Bloomington North boys' basketball all-star and Vanderbilt sophomore announced on social media Monday night that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal but hasn't ruled out a return to the Nashville school:
"After thoughtful consideration and discussions with my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal while keeping all options open. I look forward to the future and to what God has planned for my life."
Listed at 6-foot-8, 230 pounds, Roberts appeared in 21 games this season but averaged just 4.6 minutes, 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds per game. He had four blocks and was 8-of-11 at the line and 6-of-9 from the field.
Last year, Roberts looked strong as the season closed out, averaging 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds over the final three games. He played in 26 games while making four starts, putting up 2.3 points and 2.3 rebounds.
Roberts, listed as undecided on his major, was recruited to Vandy by former coach Jerry Stackhouse, who was let go after a five-year stay with a record of 70-92.
Former James Madison coach Mark Byington took over and the Commodores finished this season 20-13 (8-10 in the SEC) but made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017. Vandy lost to St. Mary's (Calif.) in the opener, 59-56 with Roberts logging 57 seconds.
Roberts was the Herald-Times Player of the Year in 2023, averaging 19.6 points and 7.6 rebounds while helping lead the Cougars to back-to-back semi-state appearances. Reached the 1,000-point mark his senior season when he was named IBCA Supreme 15 All-State and AP Third Team All-State.
