Indiana basketball's leading scorer Malik Reneau enters the transfer portal
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball forward Malik Reneau has entered the transfer portal, per multiple reports. The news came out just hours after Indiana named Darian DeVries as the team's new basketball coach.
The junior played 94 games (55) starts for the Hoosiers and was a double-digit scorer each of the last two years. Reneau led the team in scoring this season (13.3 points per game) and was second in rebounding (5.5).
Reneau shifted over to a sixth-man role to close out the season with former coach Mike Woodson moving away from line-ups featuring him playing alongside Oumar Ballo. He still managed to lead the team in scoring in four of the seven he came off the bench.
Woodson let Reneau know about the change before IU pulled off an upset over Michigan State at the Breslin Center. Reneau had his best game of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds in the 71-67 win.
"I can't say enough about Malik because I went to him before the game and told him he wasn't starting," Woodson said after the game. "That didn't sit well with him, but he said, 'Coach, whatever you need me to do.' He came in and played his ass off. That's all you can ask for. It's about team."
Reneau became the 55th 1,000-point scorer in program history in a 73-58 win over Purdue on Feb. 23. He scored a team-high 15 points on 7 of 7 shooting in what players described as a "must-win" game over their rival.
"It's super special," Reneau said of the milestone. "Thank the Lord. I don't know, it's just a big moment for me. That's all I can say pretty much. It's a special moment from me."
Reneau became a full-time starter as a sophomore and gave the Hoosiers a formidable front court playing alongside Kel'el Ware. He averaged a career-high 15.4 points per game this season and scored in double-digits in 26 of the team's 33 games.
He was part of IU's decorated 2022 signing class — former coach Mike Woodson's first full recruiting cycle — that included his Montverde Academy teammate Jalen Hood-Schifinio. The four-star was the 30th overall ranked player in the class, according to 247 Sports.
Reneau was the last player left on the roster from that class after Kaleb Banks and CJ Gunn transferred after last season.
Indiana players have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal with Woodson stepping down. Part of that timeline will overlap with the official spring transfer portal for men's basketball that runs from March 24 to April 22 this year.
The Hoosiers opted against accepting a bid to another postseason event after missing out on the NCAA Tournament as they focused on hiring Woodson's replacement.
Indiana guard Gabe Cupps entered the transfer portal on Tuesday morning.
