Everything Sean Miller said in his introductory press conference
Sean Miller was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns men’s basketball program during a press conference Tuesday, calling the position a “life-changing opportunity” and pledging to return the program to championship contention.
“I know this is a life-changing opportunity,” Miller said. “I see it as no less than that. I am looking forward to the future of doing amazing things, which has become the standard here at Texas.”
University of Texas System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife opened the press conference by acknowledging outgoing head coach Rodney Terry.
“We wish him and his family the very best,” Eltife said.
Miller praised Terry for the impact he made on the program during his tenure.
“I have immense respect for him. He's a great man. He did an incredible job,” Miller said. “He impacted Texas, the University of Texas, and its basketball program in a much greater way than just his final three years.”
Looking ahead, Miller emphasized recruiting as a central focus and highlighted Texas’ unique blend of local talent and global reach.
“The great state of Texas might be the most talent-rich state when it comes to recruiting,” he said. “Yet, what starts here changes the world. You can go to Canada and get Tristan Thompson. You can go to Seattle and get Avery Bradley. It’s the combination of this great state and also the world. I think our job is to recruit the world and bring the best program and team we can here to Texas.”
Texas Athletics Director Chris Del Conte addressed questions regarding Miller’s past, including NCAA investigations from his time at Arizona.
“We did a thorough investigation, and there was not one NCAA report that was found,” Del Conte said. “There was nothing in his background that said this guy is not prepared for this institution.”
Miller stated that his top priority is returning Texas to the Final Four and competing for a national championship.
“I know certainly from my perspective, [I’m] hungry to get there,” Miller said. “I also know this place is hungry to get back there and compete and win a national championship.”
He also outlined his vision for the Longhorns’ playing style moving forward.
“Pace, movement, togetherness, toughness,” Miller said. “I think it really embodies the style that I believe in, and that’s the style that we’ll play here at Texas.”
