The Washington Commanders need to come out of the 2025 NFL draft with someone who can take down opposing quarterbacks. General manager Adam Peters has done an outstanding job retooling the barren roster he inherited, but he couldn't fill every hole this offseason. Instead of overpaying for an edge rusher in free agency, Peters and head coach Dan Quinn chose to look ahead at the 2025 NFL draft.
The upcoming draft is deep with talented edge rushers. Fortunately for Washington, that depth will extend beyond the first round. So, if a player the Commanders covet goes before pick No. 29, they can pivot to another position or trade back.
If you could name one draft prospect who best fits the Commanders, who would it be?
Former Washington safety and current ESPN analyst Matt Bowen answered that question. Bowen named 20 team fits for upcoming prospects and his fit for Washington: Marshall edge rusher Mike Green.
Green is an easy fit for the Commanders because of the schemed defensive fronts we see from coach Dan Quinn. In Washington, Quinn creates one-on-one matchups based off alignment, and that works for Green given his traits as a pass rusher.
Green is a highly skilled prospect with a deep toolbox of counters, speed off the ball and the effort level needed to make plays late in the down. He can rush off the edge, loop inside on stunts and play as a standup 3-technique to work on interior linemen. He had 17 sacks in his final season at Marshall.
Green needed to address some questions about his character in the pre-draft process, but if he clears those potential issues up, it's difficult to imagine him falling to the Commanders at No. 29 overall. Green looks like the perfect Dan Quinn pass rusher and would make an instant impact for Washington.
