Chelsea have confirmed Wesley Fofana will miss the rest of the season after undergoing successful hamstring surgery.

Fofana has once again been plagued by injury issues this campaign despite being an important part of Enzo Maresca’s plans.

When fit the defender has formed part of Chelsea’s first choice centre back pairing alongside Levi Colwill, with the Frenchman arguably the best defender at the club.

Fofana to miss the rest of the season

The 24-year-old has managed just 14 appearances this season and only returned to the side for the win against Leciester last month after missing 13 games with an injury picked up against Aston Villa at the start of December.

At the time Maresca said he thought Fofana would miss the remainder of the season, something the France international disputed and he did return ahead of schedule.

Fofana started against Leicester and Arsenal last month and looked fit, but he was absent from the win against Tottenham with it confirmed he had suffered another injury.

Chelsea have now confirmed the worst case news that Fofana will miss the remainder of the campaign, including the Club World Cup.

A club statement read:

“The club can confirm that defender Wesley Fofana has today undergone successful hamstring surgery.

“Wesley was assessed by specialists this week after the 24-year-old suffered an injury of the muscle. Following that assessment, it was concluded that an operation would be required.

“The 24-year-old will now begin his recovery and undergo rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff at Cobham over the coming weeks.

“Everyone at the club is fully focused on supporting Wesley in his recovery.”
