Eduardo Rodriguez, Diamondbacks fall to Guardians in Chase Field exhibition
Guardians 4, Diamondbacks 0
What stood out Monday at Chase Field:
LHP Eduardo Rodriguez couldn’t wake up: After an entire spring filled mostly with day games, Rodriguez said he felt a little groggy pitching against the Guardians in a game that started at 6:40 p.m. “I’ve been going to bed every night at 7:30 when my kids do,” Rodriguez said. “I feel like I need a nap.” His results weren’t great, but they weren’t disastrous, either, as he gave up three runs in 4⅓ innings, walking one and striking out five He threw 76 pitches. “My pitches were (mostly) where we wanted,” he said. “I missed like three or four pitches that didn’t go where we wanted them to go.”
The Diamondbacks still have a few moves to finalize: The Diamondbacks broke camp at Salt River Fields and arrived at Chase Field on Monday with an extra body still on the roster and a couple of moves still left to be made. RHP Shelby Miller is expected to make the team but the club has not yet added him to the roster, though RHP Bryce Jarvis also remains in camp, suggesting another move might be in the works, as well. The club has yet to make an official move with C Rene Pinto, who is out of options and isn't expected to make the team. “I’ll keep you guys posted,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “We might have some updates on a couple things. We’ve got to finalize some things.”
Tuesday will be a short day for the regulars: Lovullo said he plans to let his position players play two innings and take perhaps one at-bat apiece before lifting them from Tuesday afternoon’s exhibition, the team’s final game before they face the Chicago Cubs Thursday night on Opening Day. “I’ll get them off the field and turn it over to the youngsters,” Lovullo said. “That’s always a fun time for me.”
Next game, Tuesday, March 24: Diamondbacks LHP Jordan Montgomery vs. Guardians RHP Luis Ortiz, 12:40 p.m., Chase Field.
