Hot spring continues for Arizona Diamondbacks starter; Josh Naylor goes deep
Diamondbacks 9, White Sox 8
What stood out on Saturday at Salt River Fields:
RHP Corbin Burnes’ dominant spring continued: For anyone who might have been unsure about the Diamondbacks’ $210 million investment in Burnes, the club’s new frontline starter has absolutely looked the part this spring. With four more innings of one-run ball on Saturday, he has given up just two runs in 13 1/3 innings with two walks and 17 strikeouts. “The plus is that the things you work on in the offseason and the things you work on in camp are showing up in game,” Burnes said. “We’re not really having to fight mechanically with anything. We’ve kind of worked on the slider a little bit and the slider has been pretty good. Just pleased with how the work we’ve put in has kind of showed up in game and we’re happy with where it’s at.” Burnes faced one batter in the fifth, giving up a single to CF Travis Jankowski. He said he lost command of his cutter, likely because he was beginning to tire. “Still getting built up,” he said. “It’s still that time of the year.”
1B Josh Naylor got on the board with his first homer: Naylor, who was acquired via trade to replace 1B Christian Walker, entered Saturday in the midst of a terrific spring, with 14 hits in his first 30 at-bats. One thing he had not done, however, was homer. He changed that in the fourth inning on Saturday when he blistered a fastball from RHP Sean Burke and sent it onto the grassy berm in right field.
1B Trey Mancini walks it off: With the Diamondbacks trailing, 8-7, in the bottom of the ninth, Mancini, a veteran in camp on a minor league deal, launched a no-doubt, walk-off homer to dead center field. The ball landed on the first level of cacti that decorates the batter's eye beyond center field. The homer was the first of the spring for Mancini, who has played parts of seven seasons in the majors, most of his time coming with the Baltimore Orioles.
Next game, Sunday, March 16: Diamondbacks RHP Brandon Pfaadt vs. Padres LHP Kyle Hart, 1:10 p.m., Peoria Sports Complex.
