We tip our cap, again, to the Berlin Brothersvalley High School girls’ basketball team for winning another state title this year.
Led by Coral Prosser’s 35 points, the Mountaineers defeated Bishop McCort Catholic, 62-50, in an all- local PIAA Class 2A championship game March 27.
Freshman Bryn Prosser hit a 3-pointer nine seconds in to open the scoring, sparking a stunning run in which Berlin Brothersvalley scored the first 15 points of the game and built an early 19-point lead, our Mike Mastovich reported.
Bishop McCort bounced back and narrowed the gap to as few as six points, but the Mountaineers held on to secure the victory.
“They were just ready to go,” said Berlin coach Rachel Prosser, mother of both Coral and Bryn.
“I don’t have a rhyme or reason. We did a good job. Our shots went in and that usually fuels good play.”
It was the latest laurel for a Berlin Brothersvalley program that won the girls’ state title in 2019 and finished as state runners-up on the boys’ side in 2021, 2023 and 2024.
And given the youth of the Mountaineers’ starting lineup – including standout player Coral Prosser, who as a sophomore already has more than 1,000 career points and Division I college offers – it’s no surprise that some observers predicted more titles to come in the near future.
“Dynasty team,” one commenter posted on our Facebook page. Added another: “I see back to back in their future!”
Another positive aspect highlighted during the title game was this region’s support for its high school student-athletes, as both area teams had large crowds there to support them.
About 250 Berlin Brothersvalley students attended as classes were canceled for the day.
And five busloads of Bishop McCort students headed from Johnstown to Hershey to cheer on the Crimson Crushers.
Said Rachel Prosser: “Our student section has been amazing the whole playoff run, and that really helps this group of girls.
“They are young. They enjoy all of the hype and all the community support.
“It is just amazing. We live in the greatest small town there is.”
Coral Prosser added: “My whole team is my sisters, and the community behind us is the rest of our family. It’s a whole family, and it’s just so special to all of us.”
