Detroit Red Wings suffer a Knight-mare in the desert in 6-3 loss to Vegas Golden Knights
LAS VEGAS — The Detroit Red Wings undermined themselves again, their hot power play overshadowed by a shoddy game in the desert.
Their hopes of making the playoffs are fading by the day, with the latest blow coming in a 6-3 loss Saturday at T-Mobile Arena to the Vegas Golden Knights. It was the Wings' ninth regulation loss in their last 11 games, and left them five points out of the Eastern Conference's second wild-card berth, with 13 games remaining.
Lucas Raymond seemed to get things off to a good start with a power play goal early in the first period, but by the time Patrick Kane converted on a power play early in the second period, the Golden Knights had scored three times on Cam Talbot, whose teammates proffered little in the way of help. Alex DeBrincat picked up his 32nd goal of the season in the third period, and on that play, Kane picked up his third point of the night. That got the Wings close enough to pull Talbot with about three-plus minutes, but Jack Eichel turned that opportunity into an empty-net goal.
TOUGH TALK: Red Wings struggling at 'big boy hockey' time of year? 'Tough luck,' says coach
The Wings (32-31-6) have banked just four points since Feb. 25. This trip doesn't get any easier, with stops ahead at the Utah Hockey Club on Monday and the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday.
Recharged
The Wings celebrated a power play goal early in the first period, their first since March 12 against the Buffalo Sabres. Kane had the puck along the boards deep inside Vegas' zone and made a pass to Dylan Larkin. Larkin spotted Raymond in the right circle and fired a pass that Raymond turned into his 24th goal of the season before the five-minute mark.
Charging ahead
The Knights got one back on their first power play, making a tic-tac-toe play. Eichel toyed with the puck at the top of the left circle before sending it down low to Mark Stone. He sent the puck to Thomas Hertl, who made scoring look easy with a quick tap-in from the right side of the net. Hertl scored again at 16.32 when he tipped Brayden McNabb's shot through traffic. The Wings successfully challenged offside when Nicolas Hague put the puck in the net at 18:09, but there was nothing to challenge when Nicolas Roy scored with 2.1 seconds left in the first period.
Surcharge
The Wings got themselves back in the game when they converted on their second power play, with Kane adding a goal to his multipoint night at 1:59 of the second period. But thing soured from there for the Wings: Stone put Vegas up 4-2 at 7:07, and another defensive breakdown enabled Hertl to complete a hat trick and make it 5-2 at 8:02, with Eichel picking up his third assist of the evening.
