Tampa (Fla.) Plant athlete Darryon Williams is coming up on the one-year mark in his commitment to Florida State, and the four-star was back in Tallahassee to take in the Seminoles eighth spring practice on Thursday.
Williams committed to the Seminoles on April 16, 2024, just a few weeks removed from his first visit to campus and subsequent offer. Since then, Williams has been back on campus a handful of times, but this was the first time that he has been back since the overhaul of offensive staff at the beginning of the offseason.
While playing multiple positions, Florida State sees him at receiver, and he spent a portion of the afternoon watching new wide receivers coach Tim Harris Jr in action.
"It was my first time seeing Coach Harris in action. I think he is heading in the right direction as the new receiver coach — gaining everyone's trust. I think he is going to be one of those coaches that brings a lot of talent at the receiver position. What he is doing right now is really special — I can feel it — just watching him through the practice. He's going to be special," Williams said.
After focusing on size during last year's recruiting cycle, Florida State has turned the page and is looking for more speed in its wide receiver room. New offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn showed him how he would be able to fit in to the new offense.
"They need speed and I'm one of those guys. My PR for the 100 meters is 10.5," Williams said. "He (Malzahn) put me up on the board and pulled out film and tape. He showed me where he could use me in the slot and how they utilize their speed all over the field."
While Williams is working on his relationship with Malzahn, and his relationship with Harris gets closer day-by-day, Williams commitment to Florida State is still grounded in the relationship that he has with head coach Mike Norvell.
"Norvell and I call twice a week. He's the closest I'm to and I feel like that's more important to be closer to the head coach," Williams said.
As Williams approaches the 12-month mark on his recruitment, he is still hearing out other programs. He has official visits planned to Florida on June 6 and Louisville on June 20. His official visit to Florida State is June 13. North Carolina is also being considered for an official visit, but no plans have been made.
