Cooper Kupp says there was 'not a ton of clarity' from the Rams on why he was released
Cooper Kupp thought he would finish his career with the Los Angeles Rams, who drafted him in the third round eight years ago. Unfortunately, the team had other plans and decided to cut him this offseason after attempting to trade the star receiver.
Kupp made it abundantly clear in his announcement on social media last month that he disagreed with the move and to this day, it’s been difficult for him to grasp. During his introductory press conference with the Seattle Seahawks this week, he said candidly how difficult the entire situation has been.
“It’s been difficult,” Kupp said. “In all honesty, it’s been very difficult and frustrating and there’s been lots of questions. It’s a real tough situation. I’ve said, I’ve always imagined that I’d finish my career there, but that’s not what the plan was that God had for me and my family.”
With an expensive contract and only 32 games played in the last three seasons, it’s not hard to see why the Rams decided to part ways with the 31-year-old receiver. He had a cap hit of about $30 million this year and as the No. 2 receiver behind Puka Nacua, the team didn’t feel Kupp was worth that amount.
While we can all conclude why the Rams cut Kupp, he didn’t get much clarity from the team.
“I’m sure they have their reasons for why they want to do things, whatever it is,” Kupp said. “Not a ton of clarity in that regard. But at the end of the day, I’m thankful to be able to walk away from that organization and be able to look back on all those memories, all those experiences, all those things that we were able to go through together and the relationships that we had with so many people there and look at it in a positive light and be very thankful for my time in Los Angeles.”
Kupp acknowledged he’s looking forward to facing the Rams twice a year as a member of the Seahawks, but that wasn’t the reason he signed with a rival. He wanted to head back home to Washington and play closer to family, while also staying on the West Coast where he’s spent the majority of his life.
